Student Handbook

The student handbook is a summary of policies, laws, and regulations that affect students. All Atlanta Public Schools policies and regulations may be accessed via the Atlanta Board of Education site.

The Student Handbook is published on an annual basis. However, Georgia State laws, Georgia State Board of Education bylaws, and Atlanta Board of Education policies and administrative regulations enacted after the publication of the student handbook shall supersede the statements and references contained in the current publication. This means that the laws and rules in the handbook are subject to change or may be amended. Please check the Atlanta Public Schools website for the most current version of Georgia State laws, Georgia State Board of Education bylaws, and Atlanta Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.

Dear Students and Families of Atlanta Public Schools,

We are excited to welcome our students back for the 2026-2027 school year! We are grateful for your choice of Atlanta Public Schools, a place where we are educating and empowering Atlanta’s students to shape the future.

This year, we continue our work of strengthening our instructional core, caring for every student, and sparking student curiosity. As we embark on this new academic year, I sincerely hope you keep these words in mind from Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, former Atlanta Board of Education Chair and President of Morehouse. “It’s not failure, but aiming too low, that is life’s greatest tragedy.” We are Atlanta’s public school system, and you are destined for greatness.

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act Notice (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that affords parents/guardians the right to have access to their child’s education records, the right to seek to have the records amended,
and the right to have some control over the disclosure of personally identifiable information from the education records. When a student turns 18 years old, or enters a postsecondary institution at any age, the rights under FERPA transfer from the parents/guardians to the student (“eligible student”). Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment

PPRA affords parents/guardians of elementary and secondary students certain rights regarding the conduct of surveys, collection and use of information for marketing purposes, and certain physical exams. Please visit this website for more information: PPRA (https://studentprivacy.ed.gov).

Parent’s Right To Know

In compliance with the requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act statute, APS informs parents/guardians that you may request information about the professional qualifications of your student’s teacher(s). The following information may be requested:

Whether the teacher has met the Georgia Professional Standards Commission requirements for certification for the grade level and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction.
Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency or other provisional status through which Georgia qualifications or certification criteria have been waived.
The college major and any graduate certification or degree held by the teacher.
Whether the student is provided services by paraprofessionals, and if so, their qualifications.

If you wish to request information concerning your child’s teacher’s qualifications, please contact the principal.

APS Nondiscrimination
